FORT PORTAL CITY — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has arrived at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal to attend the coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I of Tooro Kingdom.
President Museveni is the chief guest at the historic ceremony, which marks the formal enthronement of Nyabongo I following his selection by the Babiito Royal Clan and endorsement by the Rukurato, the Supreme Council of Tooro Kingdom.
The coronation comes following the death of the former Omukama, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27, 2026, and was buried at the Karambi Royal Tombs on September 12.
Ahead of the coronation, the King-designate underwent a series of traditional rites, including a night procession through Fort Portal and a symbolic mock battle at Mugabante before proceeding to Karuziika Palace.
The coronation programme has also included a church service at St John’s Cathedral of Ruwenzori Diocese, where the King-designate received a blessing before proceeding with the official ceremonies.
The main ceremony brings together government officials, cultural leaders, members of the royal family and invited guests, alongside thousands of residents and visitors who have gathered to witness the historic occasion.
Security has been heightened around the city, with security agencies deployed to protect the event and manage traffic as large numbers of people converge on key areas associated with the coronation.
The enthronement of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I opens a new chapter for Tooro Kingdom following the reign of the late Omukama Oyo, with the coronation serving as a major cultural event for the kingdom and Uganda at large.
