Hon. Mary Kamuli Kuteesa, Minister of State for Gender and Culture, has taken a prominent role in communicating Government’s position and support regarding the transition of Tooro Kingdom following the passing of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The Minister has emphasised the importance of respecting Tooro’s customs, traditions and established processes as the kingdom moves forward with the succession of its next Omukama. She has also called for unity and restraint during this important period.
Hon. Kuteesa has repeatedly highlighted the importance of cultural institutions to Uganda’s identity, noting that culture is a responsibility shared by the people and their institutions.
She has also acknowledged the support being extended to Tooro from different communities and cultural institutions across the country, reflecting the wider national interest in preserving Uganda’s rich cultural heritage.
On the succession question, Hon. Kuteesa has urged outsiders to allow the royal clan and the appropriate traditional structures to handle the process. She said the people of Uganda would be informed at the appropriate time about the next King.
Her message comes at a significant moment for Tooro, following the burial of King Oyo on September 12, 2026, the date that would have marked his 31st coronation anniversary.
Hon. Kuteesa has further been involved in Government’s coordination around the transition, including arrangements surrounding the late King’s final send-off and Government’s engagement with Tooro Kingdom.
As Tooro enters a new chapter, Hon. Mary Kamuli Kuteesa continues to call for peace, unity, respect for tradition and cooperation among all stakeholders, stressing the importance of protecting the dignity and continuity of the kingdom.
