RUKIGA — Rukiga County Member of Parliament Hon. Advocate Patrick Kiconco Katabaazi has renewed calls for the Government to tarmac the long-awaited Muhanga-Kisiizi Road, urging leaders to keep the project on the national development agenda.
Kiconco made the appeal on Monday as the Emikono Yeitu six-month community skilling programme is being officially launched at Kyerero Playground in Rukiga District, with State Minister for Gender and Culture Hon. Mary Kutesa Kamuli presiding over the event as Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, Kiconco, popularly known as KP, reminded Minister Kutesa that the Muhanga-Kisiizi Road has remained a major concern for residents for decades.
He said the road has been part of the National Development Plan for more than 30 years, urging the Minister to carry the concerns of Rukiga residents to the highest levels of Government.
“Hon. Minister, I would like to inform you that the Muhanga-Kisiizi Road has been in the National Development Plan for over 30 years. The people of Rukiga reached a point where they stopped discussing it, but now we have returned to raise the issue again,” Kiconco said.
He further appealed to Kutesa to use her position in Government to push for renewed attention to the road whenever the matter comes before Cabinet.
“While in Cabinet one of these days, kindly remember to push our voice further,” Kiconco told the Minister.
Kiconco Calls for Jua Kali Programme in Rukiga
The Rukiga County MP also used the ongoing event to advocate for greater access to Government wealth-creation programmes for residents of the district.
Kiconco specifically asked Minister Kutesa to consider extending the Jua Kali programme, which supports small-scale traders and entrepreneurs, to Rukiga.
“On behalf of the people of Rukiga, Hon. Minister, I request your office to find a way of bringing this programme to our area,” he said.
Kiconco’s appeal comes as Rukiga hosts the launch of Emikono Yeitu, a six-month skilling initiative aimed at equipping residents with practical skills that can help them create employment, start businesses and improve household incomes.
The programme launch is currently underway at Kyerero Playground, bringing together Government leaders, local leaders, residents and other stakeholders.
With the event ongoing, Kiconco has placed infrastructure development and economic empowerment among the key issues he wants Government to address for the people of Rukiga.
