Kampala — Hon. Wilson Kajwengye, Member of Parliament for Nyabushozi County in Kiruhura District, has raised concern over the worsening water shortage in his constituency, calling for urgent government intervention to restore reliable water supply for both domestic use and agricultural production.
Speaking during the ongoing parliamentary session, Kajwengye said he had listened carefully to the Minister’s statement on the status of water across the country before drawing attention to the situation facing communities in Nyabushozi.
He told Parliament that in the majority of areas served by piped water systems in Nyabushozi County, the pipes had remained dry for at least four months. Even where water is available, he said, it is heavily rationed, with residents receiving supply for only about three days a week.
Kajwengye emphasized that the crisis affects not only water for household consumption but also water for production, making it difficult for farmers to sustain agricultural activities amid prolonged dry conditions.
The legislator welcomed the Ministry’s focus on water for production but noted that much of the water used for production in Nyabushozi comes from communal reservoirs and dams that were constructed many years ago and have since become heavily silted.
“You cannot do irrigation if you have no dams that are functioning,” Kajwengye told the House, arguing that the prolonged dry spell provides an opportunity for government to undertake extensive desilting before the rains return.
He specifically highlighted dams serving in Nyabushozi County, including Rugongi Dam, Rwabigyemano Dam, Kyakabungwa, Muryampinguzi Dam and Akayanja Dam, which he said require urgent attention. He called on the Minister to confirm the availability of the necessary machinery so that desilting and restoration can begin without further delay.

Kajwengye said restoring the dams would strengthen water availability for production and help communities better manage water during the rainy season. He urged government to move from planning to practical intervention to address the water crisis affecting the people of Nyabushozi County.
