Mukono — Mukono District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Draville Sheilah Amaniyo, is set to distribute 60,000 coffee seedlings to farmers across the district, with particular focus on Nakifuma Constituency, in an initiative aimed at strengthening agricultural production and household incomes.
The seedlings will be distributed through the Amaniyo Foundation for Development (AFFOD), as part of Amaniyo’s efforts to support productive farming activities and create opportunities for households to build sustainable sources of income.
Amaniyo’s initiative comes at a time when farmers are being encouraged to take advantage of the rains and increase agricultural production, with coffee offering an opportunity for households to establish a long-term cash crop alongside other farming activities.
The coffee planting materials are described as resistant to Coffee Wilt Disease, a major challenge affecting coffee production. Access to disease-resistant seedlings is expected to help farmers establish healthier coffee gardens and protect their investment in the crop.
The planned distribution will particularly benefit farmers in Nakifuma Constituency, while also contributing to wider efforts to strengthen agricultural production across Mukono District.
Through AFFOD, Amaniyo has continued to promote initiatives focused on productive agriculture and household economic empowerment, with the latest coffee programme adding to efforts to support farmers with access to planting materials.
The coffee initiative follows an earlier distribution of maize seedlings to farmers in Katoosi and Nakisunga, with the programme also targeting farmers in Nakifuma and Kasawo. The maize distribution was intended to encourage farmers to utilize the planting season, improve food production and strengthen household food security.
The combination of maize and coffee support is expected to give farmers opportunities to diversify their agricultural activities, with maize supporting food production and seasonal income while coffee provides potential for a longer-term source of household earnings.
As the distribution of the 60,000 coffee seedlings gets underway, Amaniyo’s initiative is expected to strengthen farmers’ access to quality planting materials and encourage more households in Mukono to embrace agriculture as a pathway to improved livelihoods and economic self-reliance.
