KABALE – Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Enid Atuheire Origumisiriza, has pledged to make the fight against corruption one of her key priorities, calling for greater accountability, citizen participation and proper monitoring of government programmes.
Speaking today on the airwaves of Banyakigezi FM, Origumisiriza described the new term as a “kisanja no sleep,” emphasising that leaders must remain active, committed and closely connected to the communities they represent.
She thanked President Yoweri Museveni for his guidance to leaders, particularly his emphasis on leaders going to the ground, listening to citizens and presenting clear reports on the challenges affecting their communities. Origumisiriza said she is ready to follow this approach and ensure that issues affecting the people of Kabale are properly followed up and reported.
The legislator urged citizens to actively participate in government programmes aimed at improving household incomes and reducing poverty, including the GROW Fund, Parish Development Model (PDM) and other government initiatives.
Origumisiriza also called on leaders to sensitise citizens about available government programmes, saying that keeping people uninformed can slow down development. She stressed that citizens should understand the opportunities available to them and how they can benefit from government support.
She further encouraged communities to monitor funds received through government programmes and follow up to ensure that the money is used for its intended purpose. According to Origumisiriza, active citizen participation and proper accountability are essential in addressing both corruption and poverty.
Speaking specifically about the GROW Fund, Origumisiriza revealed that she had initially found it difficult to believe that the funds were already available in banks, but later confirmed that the money was indeed available. She therefore encouraged eligible citizens to engage with the programme and make use of the available opportunities.
Origumisiriza said fighting corruption, empowering citizens and ensuring proper implementation of government programmes should go hand in hand if communities are to achieve meaningful development. She called for stronger cooperation between leaders and citizens in monitoring government initiatives and ensuring that public resources deliver the intended benefits.
