RUKIGA — Rukiga District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe has urged Banyarukiga to protect government water projects, saying access to clean and reliable water is essential for better health, sanitation and improved living standards.

Dr. Alinaitwe made the call on Friday while leading an assessment of water and electricity extension projects in Kinyamozi Village, Kibanda Parish, Kamwezi Subcounty, where Rukiga leaders visited the Kinyamozi Water Pump Station to assess its progress and functionality.

The assessment brought together Adv. Patrick Kiconco Katabazi, MP Rukiga, and Rukiga District LC5 Chairman Simon Rwamagyenda, among other local leaders.

Dr. Alinaitwe called on residents to remain vigilant and ensure that no one damages, tampers with or destroys water pipes and other infrastructure connected to the project.

She said the water project is not meant to benefit an individual or a particular household, but the wider community, urging residents to take responsibility for protecting it.

“Let us protect these pipes because this water is meant to help the entire community. No one should destroy what is going to benefit all of us,” Dr. Alinaitwe said.

The legislator encouraged residents to embrace the government’s investment in clean water and make proper use of the facility while ensuring that it remains functional for future generations.

She also used humour to emphasize the importance of hygiene now that clean water is becoming more accessible in the area.

“Since water has come, let the one who has been putting on one cloth for two days enjoy the joy of washing every hour,” she said, drawing laughter from the gathering.

Dr. Alinaitwe said improved access to clean water can help communities reduce the risks associated with unsafe water while promoting better hygiene and healthier households.

She further urged Banyarukiga to support development programmes and work closely with leaders to ensure that government projects are protected and deliver the intended benefits.

The leaders’ visit to Kinyamozi Water Pump Station forms part of their oversight and monitoring of government projects, with the aim of assessing their progress and ensuring that residents receive the services for which the projects were established.
