RUKIGA — Rukiga District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Sylvia Alinaitwe has urged Banyarukiga to protect government water projects and ensure that the infrastructure is preserved for the benefit of communities.
Dr. Alinaitwe made the call while monitoring ongoing water and electricity extension projects in Kyogo Parish, Kamwezi Subcounty, where she interacted with residents and local leaders about the progress and impact of the projects.
She called on residents to remain vigilant against anyone who may attempt to damage, interfere with or misuse water pipes, emphasizing that the infrastructure is intended to serve the wider community.
“Let us protect these pipes because this water is meant to help the entire community. No one should destroy what is going to benefit all of us,” Dr. Alinaitwe said.
The legislator said access to clean water is an important step towards improving sanitation, reducing health risks and raising the living standards of families.
She also encouraged residents to make good use of the water now available, recalling the difficulties some communities previously faced in accessing safe and reliable water.
In a light-hearted message that drew laughter from residents, Dr. Alinaitwe said:
“Since water has come, let the person who has been putting on one cloth for two days enjoy the joy of washing every hour.”
She used the remark to encourage better hygiene and proper utilisation of the newly improved water services.
Dr. Alinaitwe further urged Banyarukiga to embrace government development programmes and work together to safeguard infrastructure so that the projects can serve communities for many years.
The monitoring exercise brought together several Rukiga leaders, including District Chairperson LC5 Simon Rwamagyenda, Hon. Katabazi Kiconco, RDC Zadock Kamusiime, the DPC, OC Station and local council leaders.
Hon. Katabazi Kiconco encouraged residents to embrace the water projects, noting that access to clean water can help reduce waterborne diseases and the financial burden associated with preventable illnesses.
District Chairperson Simon Rwamagyenda assured residents of continued cooperation among leaders in lobbying for more government programmes aimed at improving service delivery and infrastructure across Rukiga.
The engagement is part of ongoing efforts by Rukiga leaders to monitor government projects and ensure that communities benefit from investments in water, electricity and other essential services.
