WAKISO – Wakiso District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Betty Ethel Naluyima, called for stronger legislative action and regional cooperation among East African countries to combat illicit financial flows and protect the continent’s wealth.

Naluyima made the remarks while sharing insights with fellow legislators on how Members of Parliament could actively contribute to addressing the problem of illicit financial flows across the region.

She emphasised that Parliament had an important role to play in developing and strengthening laws aimed at preventing illegal financial transactions and protecting public resources from being lost through illicit activities.
The legislator observed that legislative action was essential in addressing financial crimes, noting that effective laws and oversight mechanisms could help strengthen accountability and protect national economies.
She also highlighted the importance of cooperation among East African countries, arguing that regional collaboration was necessary to address financial activities that crossed national borders.
Naluyima stressed that individual countries could achieve more by working together, sharing relevant information and strengthening their approaches to tackling illicit financial flows.
She further noted that protecting Africa’s wealth required collective commitment from legislators and other stakeholders, particularly through policies that promoted transparency and responsible management of resources.
The Wakiso Woman MP said parliamentary engagement and regional partnerships remained vital in ensuring that the continent’s resources contributed to economic development rather than being lost through illegal financial activities.
