PARLIAMENT — Hon. Cadet Benjamin, Member of Parliament for Bunyaruguru County, has pledged to launch the Bunyaruguru ICT Hub in December to provide free computer training and cybersecurity skills to young people and other members of the community.
The initiative aims to equip residents, particularly the youth, with essential digital skills and ensure they are not left behind as technology continues to transform education, business, employment and communication.
Hon. Cadet Benjamin made the announcement yesterday during the launch of Uganda’s National Data Policy by the Parliamentary Committee on Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The policy is intended to help Ugandans understand data protection and benefit from opportunities in the digital economy.
The legislator noted that the world is rapidly embracing digital technology, warning that people without computer knowledge and digital skills risk missing out on educational opportunities, employment and business growth.
He explained that his office had decided to establish the Bunyaruguru ICT Hub to provide accessible, free training in computer use, cybersecurity and other essential digital skills.
“We do not want our people to be left behind in this digital era. The future belongs to those who are computer- and data-literate. Everything is increasingly moving online, including education, business, farming, banking and communication. If our youth are not equipped with ICT skills, they will struggle to compete,” Hon. Cadet Benjamin said.
He further emphasized the importance of the National Data Policy in helping Ugandans understand their rights regarding personal information, how their data should be handled and how they can use data responsibly to support their personal and economic development.
Hon. Cadet Benjamin observed that developments in ICT present significant opportunities for communities and called on leaders to prioritize digital skills development so that young people can benefit from emerging technologies.
Through the planned Bunyaruguru ICT Hub, beneficiaries are expected to learn basic computer skills, online safety, protection against cyber fraud, digital marketing, online learning and how to explore legitimate online employment opportunities.
The MP urged young people to embrace digital technology as a tool for improving their knowledge, developing practical skills and expanding their businesses through online platforms.
The planned launch of the Bunyaruguru ICT Hub in December is expected to mark a step towards expanding access to digital skills training in the constituency and preparing more residents to participate in Uganda’s growing digital economy.
