KIRUHURA DISTRICT – Hon. Wilson Twinomugisha Kajwengye, Member of Parliament representing Nyabushozi County in Kiruhura District, on Wednesday 22nd, September,2026. launched the distribution of 1,000 sacks of fertilizer to coffee farmers in the district, describing the initiative as part of efforts to fight poverty and improve household incomes through agriculture.
The fertilizer was handed over to farmers at Kiruhura District headquarters, with each sack weighing 50 kilograms. The beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, thanking Hon. Kajwengye for lobbying the government to support farmers with agricultural inputs aimed at improving production and productivity.
Mr. Tayebwa Antony, Head of the Agriculture Section in Kiruhura District, commended Hon. Kajwengye for his lobbying efforts and for ensuring that the support reached the district. He also appealed to the legislator to continue following up on irrigation initiatives, noting that coffee production during the current season had been affected and that irrigation would greatly support farmers, particularly during dry periods.
The first beneficiaries were drawn from five sub-counties and town councils, including Rushere, Nyakashashara, Rwetamu, Rushere Town Council and Kenshungu. District officials said other sub-counties would receive their allocation in the order of distribution. Farmers were also cautioned against being cheated, with officials emphasizing that the fertilizer is free of charge and should not be sold.
The Minister of Agriculture in Kiruhura District, Akim Nyanga, thanked coffee farmers for embracing coffee growing and appreciated everyone who participated in the programme. He encouraged beneficiaries to share the 1,000 bags responsibly and use the fertilizer for its intended purpose so that the intervention can contribute to increased agricultural production.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Laban Kanyihora, thanked residents and all stakeholders who attended the event, describing the initiative as an important step in the fight against poverty. He also commended the government for maintaining peace, saying a peaceful environment enables citizens to engage in productive activities such as coffee farming. He further thanked Hon. Kajwengye for lobbying for the fertilizer and ensuring that the support reached the district, noting that “good things have begun.”
In his address as chief guest, Hon. Kajwengye said the broader desire is to transform Uganda’s economy into a stronger economy capable of creating greater opportunities for citizens and future generations. He said increased investment in agriculture and agro-industrialisation is central to improving household incomes, creating employment and expanding the country’s economic base.
Kajwengye explained that the fertilizer support is intended to address declining soil fertility and help farmers increase agricultural productivity. He urged residents to embrace agro-industrialisation and make proper use of the fertilizer, saying that the intervention is part of the government’s wider efforts to boost agricultural production across the country. He further expressed optimism that coffee production in the area can rise significantly, from the current estimated 20 tonnes to as much as 800 tonnes, positioning Kiruhura among the leading coffee-producing areas.
The event concluded with Hon. Kajwengye thanking the coffee farmers, the five beneficiary sub-counties, Aunt Joy, Rev. Serutaya and other residents and leaders who attended. He reiterated his call for farmers to use the fertilizer responsibly, describing the intervention as an investment in the fight against poverty and a step toward transforming farming from subsistence activity into a stronger source of income for families in Kiruhura.
