KAMPALA – Budadiri East MP Hon. Julius Nakiyi Muntu has secured a fresh commitment from Government to verify and commence payment of the long-awaited Shs 20 billion compensation for traders affected by the Nakivubo Channel floods.

During Prime Minister’s Time in Parliament, Hon. Nakiyi raised concern over the continued delay in compensating traders whose businesses and property were destroyed by flooding around Nakivubo in late October and early November 2025.

The legislator told the Prime Minister that he had recently interacted with affected traders who were still waiting for the support promised by President Yoweri Museveni.

“They have never received that compensation since last year. I wanted to know from the Prime Minister the current status of that compensation,” Nakiyi said.

Responding to the concerns, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja explained that the delay had largely been caused by discrepancies in the lists of traders submitted by different stakeholders.

According to Nabbanja, the traders submitted a list containing 2,050 beneficiaries, while the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) submitted 360 names, and KACITA submitted 480 names.

The Prime Minister assured Parliament that Government would complete verification of the beneficiaries within two weeks, after which payment would commence.

Nabbanja further explained that, following verification, she would write to the President seeking the grant required to facilitate payment to the verified beneficiaries.

Nakiyi’s intervention brings fresh hope

The commitment is being welcomed as an important development for the affected traders who have waited for months for the promised assistance.

For constituents of Budadiri East, Hon. Nakiyi’s intervention demonstrates his continued efforts to raise issues affecting ordinary Ugandans and demand clear answers and action from Government.

The Shs 20 billion support was pledged after floods from the Nakivubo drainage channel caused significant losses to businesses and merchandise in several downtown Kampala arcades and commercial buildings.

With the Government now committing to complete verification within two weeks, affected traders have renewed hope that the long-awaited compensation process will finally move forward.

Nakiyi’s parliamentary intervention has therefore put the issue firmly back on the Government’s agenda, with traders now looking forward to verification and the commencement of payments.
