SEKANYONYI, MITYANA DISTRICT — Government has deployed engineers and tractors to begin repair works on the damaged Sekanyonyi Bridge in Sekanyonyi Town Council, Mityana South, following concerns over its deteriorating condition and the disruption it poses to residents and other road users.

Some of the Tractors deployed

The intervention follows efforts by Hon. Henry Kamya Makumbi, the Member of Parliament for Mityana South, who raised concern about the state of the bridge and called for urgent action. The deployment of the technical team has brought relief to residents who rely on the bridge to access markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.

Makumbi welcomed the government’s response, thanking the engineers and other technical personnel for acting quickly. He said the repair works demonstrated the importance of leaders working together to address challenges affecting communities.

The legislator also appreciated the cooperation of the Mityana District LC5 Chairperson, Joseph Luzige, and other local leaders who supported efforts to secure government attention for the bridge.

Makumbi further acknowledged the role of Hon. Judith Nabakooba, the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and Woman Member of Parliament for Mityana District. He said cooperation among leaders was necessary to attract development and respond effectively to the needs of residents.

The MP thanked the people of Mityana South for electing him and entrusting him with the responsibility of representing their interests. He assured them that he would continue advocating for development projects and services that improve their livelihoods.

While addressing the bridge challenge, Makumbi also raised concern about pollution along River Kiragwe, which runs near the affected infrastructure. He urged residents to stop dumping rubbish and other waste into the river, warning that the practice threatens the environment and the health of the community.

Makumbi called for collective responsibility in protecting the river and maintaining a clean environment. He encouraged residents to change practices that contribute to pollution and environmental degradation.

He said he would engage Sekanyonyi Town Council authorities to find practical solutions to the area’s waste-management challenges, including improving rubbish collection and disposal. The engagement is expected to help prevent residents from using River Kiragwe as a dumping ground.

The repair of Sekanyonyi Bridge and the planned discussions on waste management address two major concerns in the area: reliable infrastructure and environmental protection. Residents are now looking to the responsible authorities to ensure that the repair works are completed properly and that lasting measures are introduced to protect the river.

Makumbi urged residents, local leaders and government agencies to continue working together to improve infrastructure, preserve the environment and promote development in Mityana South.
