ABIMU DISTRICT: The government has officially launched the Kakoka Artisanal Miners Cooperative Society Limited gold mining site in Okemel Village, Abim District, marking a new phase in efforts to formalise gold mining activities that have faced a prolonged standoff with illegal miners.
The launch, held on September 22, 2026, followed the cooperative’s acquisition of an artisanal mining licence for a 40-acre area allocated to the local community. The licensing is expected to bring mining activities under a regulated framework while creating opportunities for residents to benefit directly from the area’s mineral resources.
The development follows a period in which the discovery of gold attracted thousands of people to the area, resulting in concerns over illegal mining, environmental degradation and security. In 2024, authorities reported an influx of more than 3,000 people into parts of Abim following the discovery, prompting government intervention and increased security at the mining sites.
The formalisation of the mine is now expected to open up employment and business opportunities for the surrounding communities. Local leaders estimate that the project could generate opportunities for more than 10,000 people, while more than 2,500 miners have already been registered under the cooperative.
The project is also expected to benefit people who are not directly involved in digging for gold. Residents can participate in supporting activities such as food supply, transportation, trading and other services linked to the mining economy. Abim District Woman Member of Parliament Joyce Ayo Makamoi said the project would particularly create opportunities for young people and women.
State Minister for Mineral Development Phiona Nyamutoro said the licensing of the cooperative demonstrates the importance of miners working with government and complying with the Mining and Minerals Act. She described the development as the beginning of a wider gold project in Abim focused on sustainable mining, responsible extraction and value addition.
Authorities have also pledged to strengthen environmental protection, improve waste management and promote rehabilitation of mining areas after extraction. Government is further working towards establishing gold-buying centres to connect miners to formal markets and reduce the risk of exploitation by unscrupulous dealers.
