KABALE — Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Enid Origumisiriza, has donated reusable sanitary towels to secondary school girls in Kabale Municipality as part of her efforts to promote menstrual hygiene and keep girls in school.
The initiative benefited hundreds of schoolgirls and is aimed at addressing challenges faced by learners who struggle to access menstrual hygiene products during their periods.
Speaking during the handover, Hon. Origumisiriza noted that some girls, particularly those from vulnerable and low-income families, miss classes or risk dropping out of school because they cannot afford sanitary towels.
She said reusable sanitary towels provide a sustainable and affordable solution, enabling girls to manage their menstrual periods hygienically, comfortably and with dignity.
“Our girls should not miss school because of menstruation. This is a natural process, and we must support them to manage it hygienically. When we keep a girl in school, we secure the future of our community,” Hon. Enid said.
School administrators and students welcomed the initiative, describing the support as timely and important in addressing menstrual hygiene challenges among learners.
The headteachers noted that absenteeism among girls during their menstrual periods remains a challenge in some schools, adding that access to reusable sanitary towels could contribute to improved attendance, participation and academic performance.
The beneficiary students expressed appreciation to Hon. Origumisiriza, saying the reusable towels would ease the financial burden on their families while giving them greater confidence to remain in class during their menstrual periods.
Hon. Origumisiriza has continued to support vulnerable communities in Kabale District through interventions in education, health and livelihoods, with a particular focus on improving the welfare and opportunities of young people.
Parents and teachers also welcomed the initiative and encouraged other leaders and stakeholders to support efforts aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene and keeping girls in school.
The initiative highlights the importance of collective efforts in ensuring that menstruation does not become a barrier to education for girls in Kabale District.
