KAMPALA, UGANDA – Mukono District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Sheila Amaniyo, has asked the government, through the Ministry of Works and Transport, to fulfil its promise to provide water transport services to the people of Kome Sub-county.
Amaniyo raised the concern on the floor of Parliament, saying residents of Kome had approached her to seek government intervention over the delayed delivery of a promised ferry.
She explained that on July 21, she was invited alongside her colleague, Hon. Maseruka, to attend the launch of a ferry intended to transport people to Kome Sub-county.
However, the anticipated launch did not take place after the ferry failed to arrive, leaving leaders and residents who had gathered for the event disappointed.
According to Amaniyo, the situation was contained, after which the Ministry of Works and Transport committed to delivering the ferry in October.
She, however, told Parliament that the Ministry later communicated that it would not deliver the initially promised ferry but would instead provide a water bus.
The change in the proposed mode of water transport has raised concern among residents, who are now demanding clarity and action from the responsible Ministry.
Amaniyo said the people of Kome had specifically requested her to present the matter before Parliament so that government could be reminded of its commitment.
She urged the Ministry to honour its undertaking and ensure that the people of Kome receive the promised water transport service to address their mobility challenges.
