JINJA — Rukiga County Member of Parliament Counsel Patrick Kiconco Katabaazi has today been unanimously elected Chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection (UPFSP) in the 12th Parliament.

Katabaazi was elected during a three-day induction meeting for Members of Parliament held at Jinja Nile Resort, bringing together legislators for discussions aimed at strengthening parliamentary engagement on social protection and related national programmes.
The new Chairperson will lead an 11-member executive committee and a wider membership of more than 150 Members of Parliament who subscribe to and support the social protection agenda.
The forum provides a platform for legislators to engage on policies, legislation, oversight and programmes designed to strengthen social protection and improve the welfare of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups across the country.
Katabaazi’s unanimous election gives him the responsibility of coordinating the forum’s leadership and helping to build a stronger parliamentary voice on social protection matters during the 12th Parliament.
The three-day induction at Jinja Nile Resort was organised by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in partnership with UNICEF, bringing together MPs for orientation and discussions on social protection and the role of Parliament in advancing the agenda.
The engagement also provided an opportunity for legislators to examine the challenges affecting vulnerable Ugandans and the importance of strengthening policies and interventions that respond to social and economic vulnerabilities.
With the Rukiga legislator now at the helm, the forum is expected to bring together its broad membership to strengthen advocacy, parliamentary oversight and engagement on social protection issues affecting communities across Uganda.
Katabaazi’s election today marks the beginning of his tenure as Chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Social Protection, where he will work with the 11-member executive and more than 150 subscribing MPs to advance the forum’s agenda in the 12th Parliament.
