HOIMA – Hoima City Woman Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister for Works and Transport, Hon. Asinansi Nyakato, has renewed her determination to push for the establishment of Bunyoro Public University, saying she will continue championing the project until the region gets the institution it has long demanded.
Nyakato said the university remains one of the causes she is committed to pursuing, particularly because of its importance in expanding access to higher education and creating opportunities for the people of Bunyoro.
In a fresh message, Nyakato said she would continue fighting, advocating and speaking for Bunyoro Public University, adding that she wants her contribution to the education of the people of Bunyoro to be remembered.
Her renewed commitment comes after she moved a motion in Parliament in August calling for the establishment of the university and urging Government to fast-track the process.
Nyakato argued that establishing the institution would address inequalities in access to higher education while equipping young people in Bunyoro with skills and qualifications needed to participate in the region’s growing economic activities.
The proposed university is also expected to support training, research and innovation, particularly in areas linked to oil and gas, industrialisation and other emerging opportunities in the Bunyoro region.
Following Nyakato’s motion, the Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, informed Parliament that Government had allocated Shs4 billion in the 2026/27 financial year to commence construction of a multipurpose building.
Government further indicated that the first phase of infrastructure development requires Shs177.5 billion, with efforts underway to mobilise additional resources for the project.
For Nyakato, the push for the university goes beyond the construction of buildings, as she sees the institution as an important investment in education, skills development and the future economic participation of the people of Bunyoro.
With the project now moving towards implementation, Nyakato has made it clear that she intends to remain involved in the process, continuing to advocate for the university until Bunyoro finally gets its public institution of higher learning.
