PARLIAMENT, KAMPALA — The Woman Member of Parliament for Rubirizi District, Hon. Arinitwe Jeniva Nalongo, has raised concerns over human rights violations affecting communities, pledging to advocate for justice, equality and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Speaking during an induction training for the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, Hon. Nalongo highlighted the challenges faced by ordinary citizens who experience oppression, denial of justice and other human rights abuses.

She emphasised the need for responsible institutions and security agencies to address reported violations and ensure that affected individuals receive justice. She also pledged to use her leadership position to advocate for the rights and welfare of the people of Rubirizi District.

The induction brought together members of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, legal experts and other key stakeholders, including the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao; Attorney General Hon. Mayanja Sam; Committee Chairperson Hon. Wilson Kajwengye; and Uganda Human Rights Commission Chairperson, Her Ladyship Mariam Wangadya.

The training aims to equip newly appointed committee members with the knowledge and skills required to fulfil their mandate in promoting and protecting human rights through parliamentary oversight, legislation and engagement with relevant institutions.

According to the issues highlighted during the training, the programme covers constitutional and international human rights frameworks, the handling of petitions and complaints, oversight of places of detention, and the protection of vulnerable groups, including women, children, persons with disabilities and refugees.

Hon. Nalongo noted that her experience representing a rural district such as Rubirizi had exposed her to challenges affecting ordinary people, including land disputes, gender-based violence, alleged mistreatment in detention and difficulties accessing essential services.

She pledged to be a voice for people whose concerns may otherwise go unheard, stressing the importance of ensuring that human rights are respected at every level, from local communities to national institutions.

The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights is expected to play a key role in strengthening accountability, monitoring the protection of citizens’ rights and promoting respect for human dignity and fairness across the country.
