KAMPALA — Hon. Dan Kimosho Atwijukire, the Member of Parliament for Kazo County, has called for a comprehensive review of the East African integration process, citing challenges faced by members of the regional bloc in accessing privileges and benefits associated with their positions.

While contributing to a parliamentary discussion, Kimosho told the Right Honourable Speaker that an incident involving one of the members had exposed difficulties in the implementation of arrangements governing regional integration.

He revealed that the member, who was entitled to tax-free vehicle privileges, had her vehicle auctioned after authorities rejected diplomatic number plates that were not issued by Uganda.

According to Kimosho, the rejection prevented the member from enjoying the necessary clearance arrangements for her vehicle, ultimately resulting in its auction.

He argued that the incident raised important questions about the practical implementation of regional integration and the extent to which member states recognise and facilitate privileges extended to representatives within the regional framework.

Kimosho said the experience demonstrated the need for a comprehensive assessment of the entire integration process rather than addressing individual challenges in isolation.

He urged Parliament to consider the broader implications of such administrative and diplomatic obstacles, noting that regional integration should be supported by clear and harmonised procedures across member states.

The legislator described the information as serious and important, while acknowledging the contribution made by his colleague during the discussion.

He concluded by thanking the Right Honourable Speaker for the opportunity to contribute and for the useful information that had enriched the debate.
