Kampala: Mukono District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Amaniyo Draville Sheilah, has raised concern over the reported eviction of a family from its ancestral land in Mukono District, where they are said to have lived for nearly 50 years.

Amaniyo raised the matter in Parliament, seeking the intervention of the Minister responsible for Lands over the reported eviction and the plight of the affected family.

The legislator said the family, located in the Mbalala-Kasenge area of Mukono District, had lived on the land for decades before reportedly being evicted following the involvement of Chinese investors.

She said the matter was particularly disturbing because the reported eviction also affected the family’s ancestral burial ground, where more than 27 of their deceased relatives are said to have been buried.

Amaniyo told Parliament that the women from the affected family were crying out for justice, dignity and protection of their rights, urging the responsible authorities to urgently intervene.

She argued that land should not be treated merely as property, saying it represents a home, heritage and an important connection to families and their ancestors.

The Mukono Woman MP called on the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported eviction, establish the facts and ensure that the affected family receives a fair hearing in accordance with the law.

She further appealed to the Lands Ministry to give the matter urgent attention, particularly because of the reported destruction and eviction of the family’s ancestral burial ground.

Responding to the concern, the Minister said he had taken note of the matter and would engage Amaniyo to obtain more details before responding to the issue.

Amaniyo said the case highlights the importance of protecting citizens’ land rights and ensuring that every Ugandan is treated with dignity, security and justice whenever disputes over land and ancestral property arise.
