Kampala, Uganda — Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament Hon. Enid Atu heire Origumisiriza has thrown her support behind efforts to tackle menstrual poverty and ensure that girls do not miss school because they cannot afford sanitary products.
Origumisiriza made the remarks after attending the “Dignity for Her” fundraising dinner hosted by entrepreneur Racheal Naijuka, popularly known as Tania, at Sheraton Kampala on Friday, October 16, 2026.
The campaign seeks to expand access to reusable sanitary pads for girls and women across Uganda, with the initiative targeting large numbers of beneficiaries in districts across the country.
In a message following the dinner, Origumisiriza commended Tania for what she described as a bold vision aimed at securing more than 1.46 million reusable pads for girls and women.
The Kabale legislator said menstrual poverty remains a serious challenge in her constituency, noting that she has witnessed situations where girls miss school because they lack adequate menstrual hygiene products.
She stressed that poverty should not be allowed to interfere with a girl’s education, ambitions or future, arguing that menstruation should never become a barrier to achieving personal and academic goals.
Origumisiriza further called for stronger collective efforts involving leaders, communities, development partners and well-wishers to address the challenges surrounding menstrual hygiene and keep vulnerable girls in school.
Her support adds a parliamentary voice to the growing campaign for menstrual dignity, particularly through the promotion of reusable sanitary products that can provide a more sustainable option for girls and women facing financial challenges.
The initiative comes at a time when stakeholders are increasingly calling for practical interventions to address menstrual poverty, improve school attendance among girls and ensure that every girl can pursue her education without being held back by her menstrual cycle.
