PARLIAMENT- KAMPALA – Hon. Counsel Patrick Kiconco Katabaazi, the Member of Parliament for Rukiga County in Rukiga District, has brought the plight of more than 100 Ugandans reportedly trapped in the Ukraine-Russia war to the attention of Parliament, tabling a list of those identified as prisoners of war and others hospitalised in Russian military hospitals.
Katabaazi raised the matter on the floor of Parliament today, placing the fate of the affected Ugandans before lawmakers and seeking answers about their circumstances as concerns grow over citizens caught up in the prolonged international conflict.
The list presented by the Rukiga County legislator highlights the reported cases of Ugandans whose situations require clarification, particularly those said to be held as prisoners of war and those receiving treatment in Russian military medical facilities.
As a lawyer and legislator, Katabaazi’s intervention has brought the issue into parliamentary scrutiny, with the government expected to provide information about the affected citizens and the measures being taken to establish their whereabouts and welfare.
The matter has also raised questions about the steps taken to identify the individuals on the list, verify their circumstances and determine what assistance may be required for those detained or receiving medical treatment.
Katabaazi’s presentation prompted the 2nd Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Crispus Kiyonga, to respond to questions concerning the government’s handling of the situation and the action taken regarding the Ugandans reportedly caught up in the war.
In response, Kiyonga pledged to return to Parliament next week with a detailed account of the action taken, setting the stage for further examination of the matter and the government’s response to the concerns raised by the legislator.
The promised report is expected to provide lawmakers with further clarity on the reported cases, including the steps taken to establish the status of the affected Ugandans and address their circumstances. The actual number and individual situations will require confirmation through the relevant authorities.
Katabaazi’s intervention has placed the plight of the reported war-affected Ugandans on Parliament’s agenda, with attention now turning to Kiyonga’s promised update next week and the concrete information the government will provide about efforts to address the matter.
