KAMPALA, Uganda — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been awarded the Order of the Commander-in-Chief, a Uganda Prisons Service medal, in recognition of his leadership in promoting productive capacity, self-reliance and improved welfare within the prisons service.

The award was presented during Uganda’s 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations held on October 9, 2026, as the country marked another year since gaining independence.

The recognition highlights efforts to strengthen the capacity of the Uganda Prisons Service and improve the welfare of prison officers and inmates.

The award also recognises initiatives aimed at promoting productive activities within prisons, enabling inmates to acquire practical skills and participate in activities that can support their livelihoods after completing their sentences.

The focus on productivity and self-reliance is intended to encourage prison-based production and skills development, making correctional facilities more productive while supporting the rehabilitation of inmates.

The recognition further emphasises the importance of local production and import substitution as part of Uganda’s broader national development agenda.

Local production remains a key element of the country’s economic development efforts, with an emphasis on strengthening domestic industries, promoting value addition and creating employment opportunities.

The award also highlights the role of public institutions such as the Uganda Prisons Service in contributing to national development while carrying out their responsibilities of custody, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society.

The recognition formed part of the Independence Day celebrations, which brought together national leaders and other dignitaries to commemorate Uganda’s independence and acknowledge contributions towards the country’s progress.
