FORT PORTAL — The Omukama of Tooro, His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, has appointed former Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki to continue serving as the Acting Omuhikirwa (Prime Minister) of the Tooro Kingdom for a six-month transition period.

The appointment was announced on Monday, October 5, 2026, by the King’s Principal Private Secretary, Paul Nyakana Businge, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal. Rwomiire will lead the executive arm of the Kingdom and advise the Omukama on matters concerning the development and administration of Tooro.

Rwomiire previously served as Omuhikirwa during the reign of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. His retention is expected to provide continuity as the new monarch begins reorganising the Kingdom’s administration following the death of King Oyo on August 27, 2026.

The Omukama also retained Prince Charles Kayondo Kamurasi Akiiki as Omujwera Omusuuga, the head of the Babiito Royal Clan. Kamurasi played a central role in the succession process that led to the selection of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama of Tooro.
The Babiito Royal Clan, under the leadership of Kamurasi, selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma on September 9, 2026. The prince was subsequently presented to and endorsed by the Rukurato Rw’Obukama Bwa Tooro, the Kingdom’s Supreme Council, before assuming the name and title His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
The King has further appointed Prince Kato Benard Rwakatale Abbooki to deputise Kamurasi in the office of the Omusuuga. Rwakatale previously served as an assistant in the Omusuuga’s office, bringing experience to the new administrative arrangement.
In addition to the senior appointments, Omukama Nyabongo has established an 11-member interim advisory committee to support his administration during the six-month transition. The committee brings together individuals with experience in public service, politics, business and cultural affairs.
The appointments mark the first major administrative changes under Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I since his coronation on September 29, 2026. The decision to retain Rwomiire and Kamurasi is expected to maintain institutional continuity while the new monarch establishes his administration and charts the next phase of the Tooro Kingdom.
